Ok, I only painted one crow but I just wanted to say it. I love that a gaggle of crows is called a MURDER of crows. So freaking cool. It makes me want to be a crow. I’ve even seen t-shirts and hoodies done with a tongue-in-cheek graphic. I want one! This hoodie makes me think I should definitely get in there and do TWO crows instead of one. Then I could get t-shirts done.
YES!
I always have loved tongue-in-cheek humor. One of my favorite authors adds a very cheeky quote at the beginning of each chapter of her books. If you haven’t read her, try Darynda Jones’ series. Her first “Charlie Davidson” book is First Grave On The Right and it’s hilarious. Here are a few examples of my favorite quotes from the top of her chapters.
Charlie Davidson Series Quotes:
- Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.
- Jenius.
- Never be afraid to dart around in public, humming the Mission Impossible theme song.
- If at first you don’t succeed, failure may be your thing.
- Welcome back. I see the assassins have failed.
- I took the road less travelled. Now I’m lost.
Mr. Crow was done quite a while ago but I never did get to show him. He’s really the first splashy kind of thing I’ve done in a very long time. I combined Payne’s Grey Bluish, Opera, cobalt turquoise, Phthalo green and some Helio cerulean to make his feathers stand out. I painted using my Custom Schmincke Palette and was thrilled how he turned out. It shows the brightness of that palette, how rainbow hued the paint is.
I was so inspired by @DancingRavenDesigns and her crow paintings! Don’t you love Instagram for that? Its inspiration. If you’d like to follow me on Instagram, I’m @JustAddWaterSilly and would love to see you there. Ok, off to paint.

Your crow is so powerful! Of course, that is because you are the mistress of color and use it to the best impact. Next, I want to see and Ostentation of Peacocks!

Thanks for the shout out Jenn! Cheryl @dancingravendesigns

Such a wonderful crow. I will have to look up that author.

First of all, your crow is amazing! Yes – please create a duo – I’d love to see it! (we are fortunate to have many ‘murders’ in our area, and what a blast it is to observe the incredible ingenuity of this bird!) Also, thank you for leading me to Cheryl’s instagram page – beautiful work and – well, hey – ALASKA!!! Had the privilege of spending two weeks a few years back and now I cannot wait to return. The art, the culture and the amazing land – how blessed Cheryl is to live there and to be hearty enough to do so. Lovely post and I adore the quotes! Will have to look into the books, as well.

That’s a fabulous crow! Love all the colour you used to make him shine. I’m going to have to check out D. Jones. I’ve seen the first quote elsewhere, and love it. It made me laugh out loud, and I love that kind of humour. Thanks.

oh I too LOVE tongue in cheek humor Jenn! You really must find the book ‘An Exaltation of Larks’ by David Lipton- it is SO witty and funny!! I took it out of our library more than once(and probably should just buy it:) Just a few examples- “a bon ton of French women”, ” a charm of finches”, “a deja-gout of leftovers”….
your crow is just spectacular!! You really have captured the iridescence of his black feathers so perfectly with your choice of colors and placement! I really am in awe of your watercolor art.

LOL, Thanks Joe. I totally agree. I’d be a rabid fan of any band calling itself that. Actually surprised it’s not taken!
