I have a new pet. I don’t have to feed him, walk him or water him. However, I do have to dust him. I came across this artist on Etsy more than 5 years ago and I fell in love with her Big Eyed Birds. I thought they were so wonderfully expressive. Just kinda awesome. But, struggling artist, I couldn’t afford him. I put a Big Eyed Bird (BEB) on my bucket list because I want to collect art that I love, starting with one of these birds was a goal. This painting was done as an homage to Big Eyed Birds. I painted it in 2014 when I had first decided to be a dedicated artist.
Reasons For Hugo.
When I finally kicked cancer to the curb, I wanted to celebrate with something that always would remind me of this day, this feeling. The minute I got home from the hospital I contacted Debi and told her I wanted one of her big eyed birds. She agreed to make a BEB for me as a commission. Debi thought if she made three, it would give me a good choice. Well, she ended up making a total of fifteen birds for me to choose from! She’s such an amazing artist and so generous! I chose Hugo. It’s such a funny coincidence that the bird I chose has the same hat my original painting had. I didn’t find the painting until after I had chosen Hugo!
Now he sits on my shelf, greeting me every morning. His wise gaze reminds me to cherish every single day. I love his fierce look. This is no pushover bird.
Where I Got Hugo.
The Etsy shop is called Fishstikks and the artist is Debi. Hugo is so well made. He’s solid and gorgeous. It took Debi several months to create the menagerie that she did. I’m so thankful that she went above and beyond for me. Hugo has a real personality, I think that only happens when an artist cares deeply for their art. Thank you Debi for making Hugo for me.
I Come From Good Stock.
Since we’re having a fun day, let me tell you a little fun fact. My grandmother, Norma bungie jumped when she was 78. At that time she was the oldest woman to do it. She was actually supposed to be on the Maurie Povich show but it got bumped because of some other sensation. She died about fifteen years ago at 88. I come from strong, kick ass woman. Amazon women. We’re fierce, I’m so proud of my heritage. Thank you to my cousin Coralie who got the VHS digitally transferred. Gramma would have loved to be on YouTube! (that’s Coralie’s picture in the little bubble, she’s getting married soon. I’m so proud of her.)

Hugo is pretty darn cool! I always thought I’d like to get into paper mache but never did for some reason. Probably because of the 250 other things I’ve wanted to get into, lol!
Your grandmother sounds like a grand person! I see where your charisma comes from!
