Strathmore Toned Mixed Media is a great toned paper that actually takes watercolor! It comes in both Grey and Tan paper and now in BLUE, how cool! I just heard about this new addition to their toned mixed media paper. The three colors come in many sizes, orientations and in both pads and sketchbooks. Stillman & Birn also makes the Nova Series paper that comes in softcover sketchbooks, wire bound hardcover sketchbooks and loose paper. Nova series paper comes in three colors, grey, beige and black. I reviewed both the grey and tan softcover sketchbooks here.
I used my Strathmore Grey Mixed media paper for this piece. I really love how the watercolors look on the toned paper. I’m seriously considering ordering the NEW blue toned paper. There’s something about having the toned background that makes the art pop off the page! This paper is the 400 series and can be used for both wet and dry media. it’s 300gsm/184lb and you get fifteen sheets per pad.
I used my Schmincke palette colors on this paper and they worked beautifully. I used the Pure yellow, chrome Yellow Deep, transparent orange, ruby red, sap green phthalo green and hello cerulean.
If you’re still planning to order the Schmincke custom palette, you may want to add the Strathmore mixed media toned paper to your order! Here are the Wet Paint links for your convenience.

Oooo, thanks for the news on the blue! I’ve got the grey and tan already so will have to try out the blue as well!

My palette came today! That was quick, and Wet Paint was awesome. I was late in ordering, but still got a sweet bee magnet! I want to take my time and savour this treat, but also try every colour out at once! What a great dilemma!
