Hi everybody. It’s so nice to be back. I’ve been working in this new offering from Hahnemühle for the past few months, giving it a thorough test drive before I told you all about it. I’m talking about their new stationary 1584 notebooks. They’re hardcover gorgeousness and they come in three colors, lilac, peach and this sea green. I had a hard time choosing a color but as I see my other friends test drive their selection, I can see that there’s no wrong choice in color.
Ok, here’s my dilemma, maybe you can relate. I’m an analogue person when it comes to organization. If it’s not written down in physical form, I forget it’s on “The List“. An online list won’t do, I misplace anything that’s not saliently in my vision hourly, lol. Yep, I’m that lame. It’s always been that way.
I am an artist raised by a linear thinker.
My natural self is scatterbrained and constantly going to the next best shiny object in sight. But since I was raised by an über organized linear thinker (thank GOD for mom!), I actually require a list at all times. I get antsy and nervous if I don’t have some kind of list somewhere within reach. And really thank GOD for that or I would seriously lose my head (and leave it somewhere obscure along with my purse, phone and anything else I can possibly lose.)
Very little ghosting with the toned paper even when using brush pens!
Throughout my life I’ve either been trying unsuccessfully to learn some kind of new organization skill (I’m talking about you bullet journalling) or I’m buried under a hoard of post-it notes, scraps of paper, loose leaf, pads and other ephemera. I’ve tried several journals but they’ve either been too darn boring or too SMALL. I hate small notebooks, my writing is anything but delicate and I’m left handed. Yes, shoot me now!
And yes, a boring notebook is a THING. I find boring things harder to use because they don’t keep my interest. That’s one of the great things about this notebook, all it’s greatest qualities make it not boring.
Let me list it’s qualities:
- The 1584 notebooks are physically beautiful. A hardback enrobed with a lovely textural pastel cloth cover, it’s happiness for both your fingers and your eyes.
- It’s large but not too large, YAY! This book is a portrait A5 so it’s 5.8″ x 8.3″. This leaves you ample room to write long lists without feeling too cramped.
- The 1584 notebooks not only have dot grids on all it’s white pages but there is also toned paper in the center of each book that matches it’s cover color (peach, lilac or sea green). For the artist, this give a place to be creative. You don’t have to worry about lines interfering with your doodles and toned paper allows you to use both highlights (white gel pen) and lowlights (shadow colors and black pens) to bring your artwork to life.
- The white paper is fine stationary. There are 80 dot grid sheets of fine white 90gsm paper and 20 sheets of blank toned paper. The toned paper matches the color of the notebook and is slightly more weighty at 100gsm. I found I had no bleed through at all and only a slight amount of ghosting when using my brush pens on both the white & toned paper.
- Oh, it also has the requisite elastic closure, tight enough to let you know the book is securely closed.
- Finally, there are three color coded and matching bookmarks. I thought giving three was a nice edition and if you’re like me you can make one bookmark by braiding them together if you don’t need all three.
As you can see below, the ghosting on the reverse page only became noticeable when I used my brush pens. All other minor ghosting didn’t affect being able to use the reverse side of the page.
Red fine felt tip pen.
Dark colored fountain pen.
Ball point pen.
Beautiful toned paper, great for drawing & lettering
So, the 1584 notebooks gives me a beautiful, well sized place to collect every stray thought, quote and list. I can let my meandering mind keep track of everything, all in the same place. And the notebook is pretty enough to make me feel like I’m taking care of myself. A hardcover notebook may be my most decedent idea for a list keeping place but so far, I haven’t lost a single thing and I really love using it!

You make me want to run out and buy it…but wait! I have already a stash of journals/ sketchbooks in my art room, many of them with blank pages! How long will I be able to resist? Stay tuned! 😬😂🙄
