My good friend Alice Hendon recently came out with a new book called “Tangle All Around The World” and I know it would make the perfect stocking stuffer for any artist. This book is the sixth in Alice’s Artangleology Series. It is a collection of over 450 tangle patterns! What an amazing reference book for any tangle artist but also for anyone who wants to have a little down time with a pen & paper.
Many of you have probably heard of tangling or Zentangling –
“a form of meditative doodling that has patterns, or tangles, put together to form a Zen-tangle.”
It’s a wonderful way to relax and de-stress. It is also a great gateway into making other kinds of art. I know many artists who started tangling as their first foray into wanting to be more creative. This includes me.
More than fifteen years ago I started Zentangle as a way to both relax and focus myself in the direction of art. Learning to master patterns and line work helped move me toward more kinds of art. I still love to play in tangles as it never gets old. There is something incredibly satisfying in creating an intricate pattern. As you do it again and again it not only improves your line skills but also promotes creativity and a zen-like concentration.
Tangling can be simple patterns you intermingle on a page to make a pleasing piece or it can help decorate and boost other drawings and paintings. Sandra Strait does the latter expertly. In Alice’s book the steampunk fox below left is shown in black & white but I’m incredibly lucky to own the original. He’s so beautiful and tangles have brought out this fox’s personality. Without the beautiful patterns in his hat ribbon, eye patch and jacket, he just wouldn’t be the same. Alice has the original of this stunning penguin (right), also by Sandra. Yes, we are lucky to own such intricate and beautiful works of art. Both of these art works show how elaborate and amazing tangling can get.

I hope that you feel back to normal soon. I read your email about why you haven’t written any posts. I’m having dental problems, too, so I understand some of what you are going through. I try not to worry…Anyway, I just hope that you feel yourself again soon. Take care of yourself.
