Did you know that there’s a new accordion-fold book by Hahnemühle coming soon to Wet Paint Art? It’s called the Zig Zag book and Wet Paint is letting you pre-order it. I was so excited to hear about this new offering by Hahnemühle, I’ve always been fascinated by accordion-fold, also called fan-folded books. I love that you can just do art without seams, connect ideas and concepts as you move the paper along.
This book is coming in four sizes, A5, A6, 5½” square and the adorable 2″ square. The paper is 300gsm (140lb) cold pressed watercolor paper folded back and forth to make a total of 18 pages. The Zig Zag book is suitable for all wet media and can be used to paint panoramas as it folds out to one panel that can be painted upon, both front and back.
The Zig Zag book has not hit American shelves yet, it’s in transit. BUT. You can actually Pre-Order from Wet Paint. Cool, huh? This means that all the artwork you see is NOT mine. Yet. The book sure is prettying all it’s accordion awesomeness. I will be getting at least one of the sizes and painting my heart out. Wet Paint will have them in stock by early to mid March.
I can’t decide what I want to do in mine. Will I do a recipe book and illustrate several recipes? Hmmm, maybe I’ll go with my current ongoing obsession with produce and do a loooong table of fruit & veg hanging out, looking delicious. Another thought, I could do a panorama of the summer garden on one side then wait until the Fall and paint the garden again on the back, after all the flowers are put to bed for winter. Or, how about the ocean in the sunrise and on the other side, the same ocean scene at sunset? You could even write a story in it with illustrations.
The possibilities are endless!
I know for plein air artists & urban sketchers, this book is spectacular. Capture your favorite coffee shop or outdoor market in all it’s glory. No stopping to flip a page, just keep going. Morph one idea seamlessly into another.
If I get one of the 2″x2″ books, I thought of doing a hand-lettered quote on one side and beautiful floral illustration on the other. Or an art quote and all the art supplies I use painted on the other side. These mini books were so popular at the Hahnemühle trade show that Hahnemühle decided to add the 2″x2″ to the line-up of offerings for the Zig Zag. I think they’d make wonderful presents for those extra special people in your life.
My friend Alice does amazing tangling and I can see her rocking this book. Sandra, another friend of mine, paints animal postcards for her hubby everyday for his lunchbox. Wouldn’t it be awesome to do a little menagerie of animals in this accordion book? Someone you love would feel so special if you took your time and talent and applied it to this 2″ square book, and they’re only $4.90 each!
Anyway, I thought you’d all want to know about this new offering from Hahnemühle. If you want one, please phone your local art store and ask if they will be stocking the Zig Zag book by Hahnemühle, even if you are going to be ordering yours from Wet Paint. YOU asking your local store to carry Hahnemühle products helps us all. The more requests, the better. (Just so you know, I don’t get any remuneration from Wet Paint for telling you about the pre-order. I’m just as excited as you that we have a cool new accordion book!
Wanting: More oil pastels. Who knew you needed several hardnesses of oil pastels? Hahaha, so much to learn! If you’d like to help, I’d love it if you’d buy me a coffee.
Anticipating: Well obviously, the new Zig Zag book!!
Selling: I’ve ordered several mugs, magnets & buttons with my Bee (Bumble) logo and also a couple other designs. Are you interested? Leave a comment. I’ll blog about them soon.
Loving: All of my friends and followers. Thank you so much for your wonderfully warm welcome back! I really feel loved.

I am SO curious about the 2×2 size! I’m not sure I have the kind of free flowing creativity to maximize the possibilities of one of these, but I really look forward to seeing what other people do.
Maybe it’s because tomorrow is valentines day, but I CAN envision the tiny one done with candies of all kinds (especially Christmas ones)….maybe that is the perfect size for a busy holiday season. 🙂

I found accordion books great for making artist books for college, saved a lot of work having to not have to put a book together to work on
