Yesterday I showed you a few ideas for making love notes using Hahnemühle YouTangle.Art tiles. But what if you have more to say? Does your valentine need a beefier card with a little more real estate for you to go to town on? Does your love need more room to make itself known? If so, you just might love Hahnemühle postcards as much as I do. They have some serious texture and they’re fun to paint, draw, tangle and doodle on. I’ve done it all. I did a more comprehensive review of the postcards here. I even did a post on how to use the beautiful tin to it’s best advantage by making it into a DIY palette! Let me just show you all the lovely things you can accomplish on these little pieces of heaven in paper form.
I, once again, got out my pencil crayons, brush pens, Fude pen and my fineliners and went to town. Now, because these are highly textured/rough, they make it a little more work to get straight lines but as you can see, it’s not that difficult and the brush pens (both the finer one and the thick dual brush pens) worked beautifully on the paper even with the texture. I really had no trouble. I find the texture adds to the overall artwork. In the end, I love how the center of the daisies below look undulating and texturized because of the paper.
Even watercolor works on these, although you’ll have to modify how you paint a little as this paper allows for easy color lifting. It’s thick enough to take water well @230gsm. The postcards are the traditional size of 4″ x 6″ and you get thirty in a tin, just enough to write a love note to your sweetie every single day! (Ok, except when there’s 31 days, you’ll have to think of some other way to send your love on that day. ;o).
Every one of these Love Notes were relatively simple to do. For the floral ones, I just looked up some hydrangeas and some daisies and drew what I saw. I then added a little color with either the Tombow dual brush pens, in the case of the hydrangeas, or watercolor pencils with the daisies. That’s the great thing about watercolor pencils, you don’t have to even add water. Just use them as pencil crayons. I actually did add water to the Tombows. After placing the color where I wanted, I then moved it around a little using a small 0/3 brush to soften the edges. The Tombow dual brush pens are water soluble so it’s easy to get great effects. Gotta love good art supplies.
The “Love YOU” above was zentangled using a fineliner from Zebra Sensations technical pen line, I used the 0.1 to get really fine detailed lines. The hardest thing I did here is the lettering and that’s really not hard after a little practice. I’ve only been practicing for a couple weeks, here with the Love Notes and in my bullet journal. After reviewing Brittany Luiz’ book “Lettering With Purpose” I just couldn’t find time to keep learning. But when I wanted to embellish my new Bujo I got down and did a little practice. It’s amazing what you can learn in such a short time and I love what it’s adding to my art and skills. (FYI, Brittany Luiz’ book is on sale right now at 25% off)
I have heard through the grapevine that if you have trouble finding Hahnemühle Postcards, try phoning the art supply company. Ask if they actually do have them in stock and why they’re not listed on the website. I haven’t tried this but I hear it works for both the postcards and the YouTangle.art tiles. You can find the postcards at Jackson’s art supply &Amazon. Since the tin is collectable, they’ve been putting out new iterations for ten years, you can search eBay for the older tins. That is if you’re inclined to collect pretty things. ;o)
By the way, if you really hate rough paper, I heard from a little bird that there are NEW postcards and tins coming out soon. I saw an announcement on the Hahnemühle website saying that postcards now come in two kinds of paper, rough & cold Pressed. The new paper is cold pressed watercolor paper! How Cool! The new tin is gorgeous too. ——–>
We’ll talk soon, K? You know I’ll be back with more art. There’s always more art where there’s enough coffee!
Learning: that there are never enough hours in the day. Oh for a fairy who does my housework and laundry or even just cooks and does all the sleeping and eating I have to fit in to keep functioning. ;o)
Anticipating: My BIG VALENTINE’S DAY GIVEAWAY winner will be chosen in just a few days. Have you entered yet??
Planning: More art. More, more, more and you know. MORE. Hehehe.
Hoping: to win the giveaway over at Little Coffee Fox. I’d love to do her lettering 101 course then review it for you guys. I want to have a course I can recommend.

Ohhh these are rather gorgeous cards. Every year I look at what is in the shops and go Nah! And then send myself into a blind panic, thanks for some great ideas!
